Pennies are very special to me. My Popo used to love to sing that song as his nickname was Pennie. When I was having a bad day or feeling lonely, more often than not, I would find a penny on the ground. I would smile and pick it up and then look up and smile. Then, once I got home, I would put it in a jar I had labeled “Popo Pennies”. Over the years the jar filled up and I had to start new ones. Currently I have three.
Yesterday was a very sad day for me.
The US Mint pressed its final Penny.
I feel as though we are losing more and more history as the years fly by. People no long have conversations. They have short bursts of words that come across a screen of some sort. When I was a child, I could not wait until I learned to write in cursive. Now it is not taught in schools. Respect for people and country was expected… and given. Not anymore. It hurts my heart to see how much hatred there is right now. And I am honestly scared that I will live to my 90s (as is the norm for women in my family). I worry that I will lose my resilience and my hope that things will get better. For me those would be extremely nasty pills to swallow. I do not want to be bitter. I do not want to worry that part of the world is gone because of wars. I want hope. I want kindness. I want people to realize and acknowledge that every person matters. And… I want my Popo Pennies from heaven to brighten my day. So, for now I will collect all the pennies sent from heaven to me and cherish them.
Goodbye: Lincoln cent; copper; wheatie; one-cent.
Goodbye: penny for your thoughts; a penny saved is a penny earned; in for a penny, in for a pound; pinch pennies; worth every penny.
